Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

12. W: Mike, what's the problem? You've known from month the report is due today.

M: I know, but I'm afraid I need another few days. The data is hard to interpret than I expected.

Q: What does the man mean?

13. W: Excuse me, Tony. Has my parcel from New York arrived?

M: Unfortunately, it's been delayed due to the bad weather.

Q: What is the woman waiting for?

14. W: Pam said we won't have the psychology test until the end of next week.

M: Ellen, you should know better than to take Pam's words for anything.

Q: What doesthe man imply about Pam?

M: Yeah, sure. Take your time. Our train doesn‘t leave for another twenty minutes.

W: We have same day service, sir. You can pick up your suit after five o'clock.

Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place?

18. W: I really enjoy that piece you just play on the piano. I bet you get a lot of requests for it.

M: You said it. People just can't get enough of it.

Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

W: Good, Thanks. Can you tell me something about your experience in this kind of work?

M: Well, for several years, I managed a department for the Brownstone Company in Detroit, Michigan. Now I work part time because I also go to school at night. I‘m getting a business degree.

W: Oh, how interesting. Tell me, why do you want to leave your present job?

M: I‘ll finish school in a few months, and I’d like a full-time position with more responsibility.

W: And why would you like to work for our company?

M: Because I know your company‘s work and I like it.

W: Could you please tell me about your special skills and interests?

M: Of course, I‘m good at computers and I can speak Spanish. I used to take classes in Spanish at the local college. And I like travelling a lot.

W: All right, Mr. Jones, and would you like to ask me any questions?

Section C

Passage 1

Questions 26 to 29 are based on the passage you have just heard.

Farmington, Utah, is a more pleasant community since a local girls' 4-H club improved Main Street. Six 4-H girls worked to clean the 72 foot curbside that was covered with weeds, rocks and trash. Each member volunteered to clean up and to dig in plot, five flats of flowers. They also took terms in watering, weeding and maintaining the plot. Participation in this project helped the girls developed a new attitude towards their parents of their own homes; they've learned how to work with tools, and improve their work habits. One mother said that before her daughter was involved in this project, she would not even pour a weed. The experience on Main Street stimulated self-improvement, and encouraged members to take pride in their home grounds and the total community. City officials cooperated with the 4-H members in planting trees, building cooking facilities, pick-me tables, swings and public rest rooms. The 4-H girls planted trees and took care of them during the early stages of growth. The total park project needed more plantings in the following years. Members of the 4-H club agreed to follow the project through to completion, because they receive satisfaction from the results of constructive work. The project is a growing one and is spread from the park to the school and the shopping center. Trees and flowers have all been planted in the shopping center, making the atmosphere pleasant.

Questions 26 to 29 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26. What do we learn about Main Street in Farmington?

27. What do the 4-H club members do about the curbside?

28. What have the 4-H girls learned from the project?

29. Why do the 4-H girls agree to follow the park project through to complete. Question 30 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard. Passage 2 According to a survey on reading conducted in 2001 by the U.S. National Education Association (NEA), young Americans say reading is important, more important than computers and science. Over 50% of the 12 to 18 years old interviewed say they enjoy reading a lot. 79% find it stimulating and interesting. And 87% think it is relaxing. About 68% of those surveyed disagreed with the opinion that reading is boring or old-fashioned. Over half teenagers interviewed said they read more than ten books a year. The results also show that middle school students read more books than high schoolers. Over 66% of teens like to read fiction, such as novels and stories. Over 26% are interested in non-fiction, such history books.64% of students listed reading stories about people my own age. That's a favorite topic. Mysteries and detective stories came second on the list at 53%. Just under 50% said they were interested in reading about their own culture in tradition. Of the teenagers who participated in the survey, 49% said that libraries are where they get most of their books. However, many complain that their school libraries do not have enough up-to-date interesting books and magazines. Even though many teenagers in the US enjoy reading, they still have other interests. When asked which activity would be the most difficult to give up for a week, 48% said listening to music. TV would be difficult to give up for 25% of those surveyed.

Question 30 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.

30. What does the survey on teenager reading show?

31. What books are most popular among teenagers according to the survey?

32. What activity do teenagers find the most difficult to give up for a week?

Questions 33-35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

Passage 3

Thank you for coming, everyone. Today‘s presentation will show how we see the development of the motor car in the short to medium term, and that is why we have invited all of you here today. Let’s start with power. It‘s clear that petrol-driven engines have no future. Already there are many alternative fuel vehicles on the market, powered by anything from solar power to natural gas. Some independent thinkers have even produced cars that run on vegetable oil. But as we all know, of all these alternative fuel vehicles, the most practical are electric vehicles. Sure, in the past electric vehicles have their problems, namely, a limited driving range, and very few recharging points, which limited their use. Now, however, recent developments in electric vehicle technology mean they can match conventional petrol engines in terms of performance and safety. Let’s not forget that electric vehicles are cleaner. Plus, importantly, the power source is rechargeable, so this does not involve using any valuable resources. Moving on to communications, very soon, cars will be linked to GPS satellites, so they‘ll do all the driving for you. What controls remain for the users will be audio-based, so, for example, you’ll just have to say “a bit warmer”, and the air conditioning will adjust automatically. You‘ll also be able to receive email, music and movies, all via an internet link. So just type in the destination you want, sit back, sleep, watch your movie, whatever. Questions

33-35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

33. What is the presentation mainly about?

34. What used to restrict the use of electric vehicles?

35. What does the speaker say about electric vehicles of today?

In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition (学会) of each new skill- the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.

Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are sever over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness.

As regard the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality(道德). Also, parents should realize that “ example is better than precept ”. If they are not sincere and do not practice what they preach(说教), their children may grow confused and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.

A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.

D.will make him lose interest in learning new things

2.In the process of children’s learning new skills parents ________

A. should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they read

B. should not expect too much of them

C. should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their own

D.should creative as many learning opportunities as possible

3.The second paragraph mainly tells us that _________

A. parents should be strict with their children

B. parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the community.

C. parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children alone.

D. parental vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation.

4.The word “precept” (Line3, Para.3) probably means “_______”

A. Idea

B.punishment

C. behavior

D. instruction

5.In moral matters, parents should ________

A. observe the rules themselves

B. be aware of the marked difference between adults and children

C. forbid things which have no foundation in morality

D.consistently ensure the security of their children

Learning how to write is like taking a course in public speaking. I'd ask whether anyone in class had evertaken such a course. Always a few hands would go up.

"What did you learn in that course?" I'd ask.

"Well, the main thing was learning how to face an audience: not to be inhibited (拘谨)... not to be nervous. "

Exactly, when you take a course in public speaking nowadays, you don't hear much about grammar and vocabulary. Instead. you're taught how not to be afraid or embarrassed, how to speak without a prepared script. how to read out to the live audience before you. Public speaking is a matter of overcoming your long-standing nervous inhibitions.

The same is true of writing. The point of the whole thing is to overcome your nervous inhibitions, to break through the invisible barrier that separates you from the person who’ll read what you wrote. You must learn to sit in front of your typewriter of dictating machine and read out to the person at the other end of the line.

Of course, in public speaking with the audience right in front of you, the problem is easier. You can lookat them and talk to them directly. In writing, you 're alone. It needs an effort of your experience or imagination to take hold of that other person and talk to him or her. But that effort is necessary or at least it' s necessary until you've reached the point when you quite naturally and unconsciously "talk on paper".

Choose correct answers to the question:

1.The main task of a public speech course is to __________.

A.teach grammar and vocabulary

B. teach how to write a script

C. teach how to overcome nervousness

D. teach live spoken-language expressions

2.Learning how to write is similar to learning how to speak in public in that writer should _____.

A.overcome his or her nervousness in the first place

B. take hold of a reader and talk to him or her before writing

C. learn to use a typewriter or dictating machine

D. talk to himself on paper

3.what does the author compare writing and public speaking?

A.Writhing needs more experience and imagination than public speaking

B.Both writing and public speaking require great effort

C.Writhing is just as imagination as public speaking

D.Writhing is not as natural as public speaking

4.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Few students feel the need to learn public speaking

B.Training is necessary before you can speak with a script

C.In public speaking, the audience are more nervous than the speaker

D.Writing is just like making a public speech on paper

5.This selection is mainly about ___________.

A.the effort involved in writing

B.the similarities between writing and public speaking

C.learning how to make a public speech

D.learning how to talk on paper

A中的Few students与事实不符;B中的speak with a script在文中未有提及;C中的separated by a barrier错误。

Even plants can run a fever, especially when they're under attack by insects or

disease. But unlike humans, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away-straight up. A decade ago, adapting the infrared (红外线) scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide(杀虫剂) spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don't have pest(害虫) problems.

Even better, Paley's Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems

before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night ,an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running "fevers".Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.

The bad news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation.Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. "This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States, "says George Oerther of Texas A&M. Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks.remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.

1. Plants will emit an increased amount of heat when they are _______

A) sprayed with pesticides B) facing an infrared scanner

C) in poor physical condition D) exposed to excessive sun rays

2. In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to

_______.

A) estimate the damage to the crops

B) measure the size of the affected area

C) draw a color-coded map

D) locate the problem area

3. Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by _______.

A) resorting to spot-spraying B) consulting infrared scanning experts

C) transforming poisoned rain D) detecting crop problems at an early stage

4. The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some

difficulties _______.

A) the lack of official support B) its high cost C) the lack of financial D) its failure to help increase production

5. Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of _______.

A) the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produce.

B) growing concern about the excessive use of pesticides on crops

C) the forceful promotion by the Department of Agriculture

D) full support from agricultural experts

本文第一段的第一句话谈到:“Even plants can run fever...by insects or disease.”

在第一段的原文中“The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide spraying...”

并呼吁说:“But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10years ago.”

在文章最后一段中说“But with the renewed concern...to get back into operation”由此可明显看出,B的信息与本文内容相符,所以答案B是正确的;而A、C、D都与本文不符。
