2013年12月大学英语四级考试真题及答案解析

46.Caplan suggests that kids who don’t loveschool go to work.

K)What might be a lotcheaper is putting more kids to work: not necessarily as burger flippers but aspart of an educational effort. Caplan notes that work also builds valuableskills—probably more valuable for kids who don’t naturallylove sitting in a classroom. Heckman agrees wholeheartedly: “People aredifferent, and those abilities can be shaped. That’s what we’ve learned, and public policy should recognize that.”

47.An increasing number of families spendmore money on houses in a good school district.

C) For my entire adult life, a goodeducation has been the most important thing for middle-class households. Myparents spent more educating my sister and me than they spent on their house, andthey’re not the only ones… and, ofcourse, for an increasing number of families , most of the cost oftheir house is actually the cost oftheir house is actually the cost of living in a good school district.Questioning the value of a college education seems a bit like questioning thevalue of happiness ,or fan.

48.Subsidized loans to college students area huge waste of money, according to oneeconomist.

E) Perhaps a bit. Richard Vedder , an OhioUniversity economics professor , says, “I look at the data, and I see college costs rising faster than inflation up to the mid-1980s by Ipercent a year. Now I see them rising 3 to 4 percent a year over inflation. What has happened ? The federal government has started dropping money out ofairplanes,”Aid has increased ,subsidized (补贴的)loans have becomeavailable, and “the universities have gotten the money,” EconomistBryan Caplan , who is writing a book about education, agrees. “ It is agiant waste of resources that will continue as long as the subsidies continue.”

49.More and more kids find they fare worsewith a college diploma.

B) The answer, I fear, is no. For anincreasing number of kids, the extra time and money spent pursuing a collegediploma will leave them worse off than they were before they set foot oncampus.

50.For those who are not prepared forhigher education, going to college is not worth it .

H) James Heckman, the Nobel Prize–winningeconomist, has examined how the returns on education break down for individualswith different backgrounds and levels of ability. “Even withthese high prices, you’re still finding a high return for individuals who are bright andmotivated,” he says. On the other hand, “if you’re notcollege ready, then the answer is no, it’s not worth it.” Expertstend to agree that for the average student, college is still worth it today, but they also agree that the rapid increase in price is eating up more and moreof the potential return. For borderline students, tuition hikes can push thosereturns into negative territory.

51.Over the years the cost of a collegeeducation has increased almost by 100%.

D) The average price of all goods andservices has risen about 50 percent. Butthe price of a college education has nearly doubled in that time. Is theeducation that today’s students are getting twice as good? Are new workers twice assmart? Have they become somebodymassively more expensive to educate?

52.A law passed recently allows manystudents to pay no more than one tenth of their income for their college loans.

J) We have started tosee some change on the finance side. A law passed in 2007 allows many studentsto cap their loan payment at 10 percent of their income and forgives anybalance after 25 years. But of course, that doesn’t control the costof education; it just shifts it to taxpayers. It also encourages graduates tochoose lower-paying careers, which diminishes the financial return to educationstill further. “You’re subsidizing people to become priests and poets and so forth,” saysHeckman. “You may think that’s a good thing, or you may not.” Either way it willbe expensive for the government.

53.Middle-class Americans have highlyvalued a good education.

C) For my entire adult life, a goodeducation has been the most important thing for middle-class households. Myparents spent more educating my sister and me than they spent on their house, and they’re not the only ones… and, ofcourse, for an increasing number of families , most of the cost oftheir house is actually the cost oftheir house is actually the cost of living in a good school district.Questioning the value of a college education seems a bit like questioning thevalue of happiness ,or fan.

54.More kids should be encouraged toparticipate in programs where they can learn not only job skills but alsosocial skills .

L) Heckman would liketo see more apprenticeship-style programs, where kids can learn in theworkplace—learn not just specific job skills, but the kind of “soft skills,” likegetting to work on time and getting along with a team, that are crucial forcareer success. “It’s about having mentors and having workplace-based education,” he says. “Time andagain I’ve seen examples of this kind of program working.”

55.Over fifty percent of recent collegegraduates remain unemployed or unable to find a suitable job.

According to the dictionary definition of “create”, ordinary people are creative every day. To create means “to bring into being, to cause to exist”—something each of us does daily.

We are creative whenever we look at or think about something in a new way. First this involves an awareness of our surroundings. It means using all of our sese to bee aware of our world. This may be as simple as being aware of color and texture, as well as taste, when we plan a meal. Above all, it is the ability to notice things that others might miss.

A second part of creativity is an ability to see relationships among things. I f we believe the expression, “There is nothing new under the sun,” the creativ ity is remaking or rebining the old in new ways. For example, we might do this by finding a more effective way to study or a better way to arrange our furniture, or we might make a new bination of camera lenses and filters to cr eate an unusual photograph.

A third part of creativity is the courage and drive to make use of our new ide as, to apply them to achieve some new results. To think up a new concept is one thing; to put the idea to work is another.

These three parts of creativity are involved in all the great works of genius, but they are also involved in many of our day to day activities.

26.Which of the following activities is NOT a creative one according to t he passage?

A.To prepare a meal.

B.To arrange the furniture in a peculiar way.

C.To buy some books from a bookstore.

D.To “write” a letter with the puter.

27.The author holds that ____.

A.creativity is of highly demand

B.creativity is connected with a deep insight to some extent

C.creativity is to create something new and concrete

D.to practise and practise is the only way to cultivate one’s creativity

28.“There is nothing new under the sun.” ***Par.3*** really implies that ____.

A.we can seldom create new things B.a new thing is only a tale

C.a new thing can only be created at the basis of original things D.we can scarcely see really new things in the world

29.What does the author think about the relationship between a new though t and its being put into practice?

A.It’s more difficult to create a new thought than to apply it in practice.

B.To find a new thought will definitely lead to the production of a new thing.

C.One may e up with a new thought, but can not put it into practice.

D.A man with an excellent ability of practice can easily bee an inventor.

30.The best title for this passage is ____.

A.How to Cultivate One’s Creativity B.What is Creativity

C.The Importance of Creativity D.Creativity—a Not Farway Thing

When I was studying at Yale, some phenomena puzzled me greatly. I found that Chinese students or Asian students were very polite in class while American students often interrupted the professor, asking questions and dominating the discussion. The Chinese students were not as aggressive as American students.

I was impressed by the role of the professor in the seminar***讨论会***. The professor didn’t act as an authority, giving final conclusions, but as a reseac her looking for answers to questions together with the students. One lingui stic***语言的*** feature of his interacting with his students was that he used many modal***情态的*** verbs—far more than I did in Beiwai. When answering questions, he usually said, “This is my personal opinion and it could be wrong.” or “You could be right, but you might find this point of view also interesting.”

In China, authorities are always supposed to give wise decisions and correct di rections. Therefore, students always expect the professor to give an answer to th e question. I still remember how frustrated they were when foreign teachers did not provide such an answer. Their expectations from authorities are much higher than that of American students. Once the Chinese students got the answer, they w ere sure about it.

Education in China is valued for united thinking. I remember American teachers who taught in our university plaining about the fact that Chinese students u niformly expressed the same idea in their English position. The examinations in America usually do not test a student’s ability to memorize the material but his ability to *** yze and solve problems. Education in America is valued not on ly as a means to obtain employment but as a process of enhancing critical thinking.

31.In the USA, when the students are in class, ____.

A.a Chinese student tends to be very active B.an American student likes to make trouble

C.a Chinese student likes to puzzle the teacher D.an American student tends to be vigorous

32.A teacher in the USA prefers to ____ when he answers questions.

A.be very sincere B.be very direct

C.be very self confident D.be very indifferent

33.What is the opinion of the author concerning the difference of teachin g methods between China and the USA?

A.He thinks that Chinese teaching metods can make students learn more.

B.He holds that the major purpose of Chinese teaching methods is to impro ve students’ remembrance.

C.He thinks that American teaching is ability oriented.

D.He holds that American teachers hate to give a test.

34.The author thinks that the relationship between the student and the te acher is ____.

A.more intimate in China B.closer in China C.looser in USA D.more harmonious in USA

35.The education in USA may produce some ____ graduates.

A.talkative B.conventional C.creative D.imaginative

32.答案A。

If the population of the earth goes on increasing at its present rate, there will eventually not be enough resources left to sustain life on the planet. By the middle of the 21st century, if present trends continue, we will have used up all the oil that drives our cars, for example. Even if scientists develop new ways of feeding the human race, the crowded conditions on earth will make it necessary for lus to look for open space somewhere else. But none of the other planets in our solar system are capable of supporting life at present. One possible solution to the problem, however, has recently been suggested by American scientist, Professor Carl Sagan.

Sagan believes that before the earth's resources are compleetely exhausted it will be possible to change the atmophere of Venus and so create a new world almost as large as earth itself. The difficult is that Venus is much hotter than the earth and there is only a tiny amount of water there.

Sagan proposes that algae organisms that can live in extremely hot or cold atmospheres and at the same time produce oxygen, should be bred in condition similar to those on Venus. As soon as this has been done, the algae will be placed in small rockets. Spaceship will then fly to Venus and fire the rockets into the atmosphere. In a fairly short time, the alge will break down the carbon dioxide into oxygen and carbon.

When the algae have done theri work, the atmosphere will become cooler, but befor man can set foot on Venus it will be neccessary for the oxygen to produce rain. The surface of the planet will still be too hot for man to land on it but the rain will eventually fall and in a few years something like earth will be reproduced on Venus.

1. Inte long run, the most insoluble problem caused by population growth on earth will probably be the lack of ________.

a. food

b. oil

c. space

d. resources

2. Carl Sagan believes that Venus might be colonized from earth because ________

a. it might be possible to change its atmosphere

b. its atmosphere is the same as the earth's

c. there is a good supply of water on Venus

d. the days on Venus are long enough

3. On Venus there is a lot of ________.

a. water

b. carbon dioxide

c. carbon monoxide

d. oxygen

4. Algae are plants that can ________.

a. live in very hot temperatures
